​U.S. hold 22% of the world’s COAL reserves, raking first globally transported on earth and 20% of the grain produced in the country, is exported to other countries.

​ Coal is typically moved from mines by rail or truck to a loading dock, then transferred into Barges and transportation is a cornerstone of U.S. coal logistics, offering a cost-effective, high-capacity method for moving bulk coal, primarily serving power plants and export markets via the Ohio and Mississippi River systems. While coal remains a top Barge commodity, demand is declining due to plant retirements with Barges often used for short-haul or to transfer coal from rail to ship. Coal Barge Transportation, roughly 17% of U.S. coal-burning power plants, are served by waterborne transportation. It is commonly used for transporting coal from mines.  A single "jumbo" barge can carry around 1,500–1,800 tons of coal, and large tows can move 72,000 tons, providing significant economies of scale, especially when compared to rail or truck transport.  The Ohio, Monongahela, and Mississippi River systems are vital for moving coal, particularly for exports via the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans and Mobile.

​Coal productive means, encompassing mining, processing, and Transportation, are crucial for sustaining energy production.  Transportation costs often account for a significant portion (up to 39% in 2014) of the total delivered cost of coal. Key transport solutions include rail, which handles nearly 70% of U.S. coal deliveries, followed by Barges for Inland & Water transport.

While pipelines carry majority of oil, Barges provide flexible lower-cost and environmentally friendlier transport, compared to trucks or rail which eases terminal congestion.  A river Barge can hold 10,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil.
